Maker Mania #3: Enabling the Future, Lego Tornadoes, Messing About With Making, Art Parts, Solid State Depot

The Faire is upon us, dear Boulderites, Boulderinos and various surrounding Boulderphillics! Or at least it will be upon us come Jan 31 – Feb 1 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. And that means MAKERS galore! Join us here in the next few weeks as we preview the awesomeness that will be at the core of the Faire.

Enabling the Future: Open source, 3D-printed prosthetics.

Messing About with Making: What can we make when we have the time and space to experiment and play? When we can follow our passions without imposed agendas? Francs and David Hawkins, Boulder-based educational philosophers, advocated for the power of learning through self-propelled exploration without an imposition from arbitrary goals. They called this exploration “Messing About”. Join us in Messing About with enticing recycled materials. By taking the time and space for open-ended exploration, discover both the potentialities of these materials as well as the processes of learning employed by children and adults.

Hawkins Centers of Learning (HCoL) is a non- profit dedicated to weaving the philosophies of Frances and David Hawkins into today’s educational culture.

Art Parts Boulder: FREE Reclaimed Material Art Activity, Ephemera Jumble: “The found object is the artistic medium of the 21st century,” says Denver Post art critic Mark Ridley. Join the trend by learning the different ways that disparate objects can be joined into a unified whole using glues, cold joins, stapling, riveting, etc.

Lego Tornadoes: We are the Lego Tornadoes, an FLL Lego Robotics Team with 10 kids ages 8-13. We have created educational games in MineCraft that teach grades 1st-5th Reading, Math and Coding. Please come and enjoy our games! They are fun and educational! We have 3 laptops that are demoing our games. You can come and play! We also have one laptop projecting our games that we are demoing, so you can see what we have created.

SolidStateDepot: Solid State Depot is Boulder’s
 hackerspace, a physical place
where like-minded people get
together and collaborate on
creative projects. We were
founded in July 2010 and
moved into our first space a
few months later in November.
Our space functions as both a
workshop and a place to hold
our meetings. Here we
explore art and technology
and support each other in
developing creative
ideas/plans/toys/inventions.
