Maker Mania #5:, Boulder Public Library, Douglas County Schools, Zander Lander, Project Daffodil

The Faire is upon us, dear Boulderites, Boulderinos and various surrounding Boulderphillics! Or at least it will be upon us come Jan 31 – Feb 1 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. And that means MAKERS galore! Join us here in the next few weeks as we preview the awesomeness that will be at the core of the Faire. is a modern communication system that uses tags (i.e. stickers) to organize information around real things. Every tag is a uniquely encoded sticker that activates an online notebook, pager, and remote control when you scan it with your phone. Maker alert: put these tags on their projects so others can scan the project to bookmark it on their phone. It will give attendees an easy way to contact the exhibitors after the event!

Douglas County School District: Exploring educational technology and innovation in a school system of choice. Games, games and games!

Boulder Public Library: Several stations with hands-on activities and lots of take-home crafts for attendees. We’ll be making LED papercrafts, screen printing shirts, shooting video, and much more.

The Zander Lander

The GEM and The Zander Lander: The Giant Electric Muffin (GEM) and the umbrella tricycle called the Zander Lander after it’s pilot, year -old Leo Zander Norton, are way to move through festivals with maximum joy for ourselves and others. The Zander Lander has been seen at Burning Man, Apogeaga, Boulder Lights of December, The Kinetics Sculpture Challenge, CU Homecoming Parade, Green Streets, the NOCO Maker Faire, and other venues. The GEM, completed this month is the first of its kind in Colorado and is one of about 20 muffin cars nationwide that congregate (sometimes as a Baker’s Dozen) at the Burning Man Festival and Maker Faires from coast to coast.

Project Daffodil: Project Daffodil is a book and a toy being developed by graduate students from California State University East Bay. We have created an electrical pop up book and magic wand designed to teach young girls who are in the “princess phase” basic circuits and programming techniques. The pop up book uses paper mechanisms and printed circuitry to create an educational and entertaining adventure. The magic wand is a controller for some creatures from our magical kingdom. Come help Princess Cassie restore power to the kingdom!
